The Watchers
As they passed in the dark
I kept walking
I could hear every sound
And kept walking
Just ahead was a doorway
They waited
Turned to run but I stopped
And they waited
Turned around & looked back
They were watching
Stood alone in the street
With them watching
Felt each breath that I took
They were talking
Strained to hear what they said
They kept talking
Saw them nod and agree
I was frightened
Watched them turn back to me
Really frightened
Tried to think what to do
They were coming
Stomach churning with fear
They kept coming
I felt dizzy & faint
They were laughing
Tears were pricking my eyes
They stopped laughing
One mans hand on my arm
I was shaking
Someone started to speak
I kept shaking
‘We just wanted to know’
Someone asked me
‘If you’re feeling ok’
Someone asked me
‘We were walking ahead’
Now they smiled
‘You looked frightened and lost’
Still they smiled
‘Can we help, are you ill’
I was laughing
‘Have you somewhere to go?’
I kept laughing
As they passed in the dark
And kept walking
I could hear every sound
They kept walking
Just ahead was a doorway
I waited
Could have run, but I stopped
And I waited
When they turned to look back
I was watching
All alone in the street
I stood watching
